A Glorious Beauty

By: Katelyn Abbott

Author’s Summary: A poem about who Helen of Troy is and her being a glorious beauty.

A glorious beauty is she.

Blonde curls as golden as the sun cascade down her back,

Blue eyes as blue as the sky shine with her brilliance and charm in them,

China nose, dainty mouth, even white teeth, full lips as red and soft as rose petals,

Skin as smooth and soft and white as ivory,

And the voice as sweet as a songbird

Beautiful like honey and spice is she.

Called the daughter of Zeus and Leda and the sister of Castor and Pollux,

She is desired by men, envied by women, and favored by the gods.

She spends hours every morning in her chambers bathing and having her maids comb

Her hair with a bone comb and dress her hair, dress her in rich robes rubbed with olive oil

To make them shine, end up putting cosmetics on her face, fasten on her jewelry, make

Her skin gleam, and paint her toenails. The air around her was rich for she smells of her

Exotic perfume that makes a person start to think of burning trees, roses, and sweet herbs

All at once.

She has set before her fine food and good wine at every meal for she deserves only the

Best.

She tends to her spinning at her golden spindle and her weaving at her loom for much of

The day.

The arching lilies, the cascading roses, the glittering suns, the proud stags, the spilled wild

Birds, and the trailing vines that she creates in her handiwork as she sits in her chair beside

Her husband red-haired and grayish blue-eyed Menelaus on his golden throne as he hears

Entreaties and petitions from his subjects that he governed over as the mighty king of

Sparta.

Their children Hermione, Aethiolas, Maraphius, Pleisthenes, and Nicostratus study with

Their tutors and tend to their play with their father King Menelaus often joining it in with

Them.

The people around the Spartan queen desire her praise of them as they long for her smile,

The sound of her voice, and the touch of her hand gently on them so they might say they

Were touched by the goddess among mortal women to other people who would envy them.

The Spartan people stumble to their feet in supplication as their queen glides among them

Like a swan in her simple white gown with a great red jewel known as the Star Stone

 Around her neck.

The most beautiful woman in the world is the Spartan queen well known as Helen of Troy.
