Number of Deaths:

Buffy died at the age of sixteen after being bitten and drowned to death by the Master. This was a clinical death, in which the heart stops beating, but there is still brain activity. People who experience clinical deaths have often been revived. This death activated Kendra Young as the Slayer.

Buffy’s second death occurred when she twenty years old as she had sacrificed herself to save Dawn and the world by hurling herself off a tower and using her own body to close a mystical portal. She was buried in a Sunnydale cemetery. This was where her body rested for one hundred forty-seven days until Anya, Tara, Willow, and Xander raised her from the dead.

When Buffy was shot by Warren Mears, she briefly flat lined in the hospital before being saved by Willow, who removed the bullet via telekinesis. It was never acknowledged by anyone else or Buffy whether this constituted a third death. Buffy’s nightmare came true when she was turned into a vampire by the Master before a comatose Billy Palmer was inadvertently merging the line between dreams and reality. This death was quickly reversed when Billy woke up. An alternate version of Buffy also died at the hands of the Master, who snapped her neck, but this timeline was erased by the alternate Giles.

Overall Personality:

Buffy was a brilliant, courageous, and determined young woman with a dry sense of humor, an endless amount of energy, and a fiercely independent nature. She had been a former airheaded, blonde, and superficial valley girl turned Slayer with a penchant for fighting against demons, evil vampires, and the forces of evil to protect humankind from them. Certainly friendly and generous to people around her, she did make friends easily and she ended up not judging people until she got to know them. Buffy fell in love quickly and she would go to other people to seek comfort in them even if the relationship with that particular person might not have been a good idea for her to have had. Other flaws that Buffy has include her holding grudges against the people who she believed to have wronged her in some way, her being judgmental, irrationality, and a tendency to be self-absorbed and selfish. These flaws only made Buffy a walking contradiction as she genuinely cared about the people she protected and she had been inevitably loyal to her family, her friends, and the people that she protected. She had a strong moral compass and she would always do the right thing regardless of what she might have to sacrifice to do it. She put other people before herself and she had proven many times that she was willing to go to the ends of the earth and back for the people she protected even if she had to sacrifice herself to do it for the sake of saving the world. The thing that she attributed the most to her survival as the Slayer was her family and her friends since she considered her worldly attachments to family and friends to be an asset instead of a weakness even though the stuffy Watcher Council members and the First Slayer seemed to disagree with her.

Buffy was unique as a Slayer as she had refused to give up a chance at having a normal life meaning attending school, fun pastime hobbies, going on dates, and having family and friends in order to pursue her destiny as other past Slayers had done so and she worked with a group of close friends in her fight against demons, evil vampires, and the forces of darkness instead of alone like other past Slayers had done. She did not shy away from her emotions as other Slayers had done. Evidently Kendra Young, who had been trained as a Slayer from early childhood, explained to Buffy that a Slayer did not have the luxury of having emotions to which Buffy responded that her emotions were assets and that they made her a better Slayer since they give her power. However she did tend to let her emotions affect her better judgment on occasion as she was led by her heart first and not necessarily her head.

Buffy would always focus all of her energy when it came to duties as she feared to let anybody who counted on her down in her and because of this she could have been seen as a very resolved and serious person when it came to slaying among other important matters unlike her more easygoing and less serious counterpart Faith. She was a natural-born leader and she did have much experience in battle strategies and tactical plans. It made it first nature to her to take the lead in any crisis and not second place which made her butt heads with supposed authority figures and challenge old-school conventions. If Buffy believed that what she was doing was the right thing then she would pursue that option without looking back. Occasionally though she would come across as arrogant and boastful or a little too self-assured. She had been the Slayer for a long time which made her think that she knew everything there was to know when it came to ridding the world of evil. That was why Giles did not even attempt to give her the official Slayer Handbook as he knew that she would have done things her own way no matter what anyway.

One of Buffy’s most defining personality traits was her tendency to keep things secret from the rest of the Scooby Gang which came back to haunt her more than once. Such secrets included Angel’s resurrection, Dawn’s identity as The Key, her relationship with Spike, and her sighting of Spike in the basement of the new Sunnydale High School. Buffy was shown to have an often usually forgiving nature with the only exception of her not forgiving someone would possibly be Faith to an extent.

She had a tendency to mangle the names of demon species and evil vampires much to Giles’ constant irritation with her. Some examples would include how “Acathla” became “Al Franken” and “Alfalfa,” Beljoxa’s Eye became “Botox’s Eye,” Bezoar became “Bozo,” “Turok-Han” became “Chaka Khan,” “Kakistos” became  “Khaki Trousers,” “Kissing Toast,” and “Taquitos”, and “Morgala” became “Morgan Freeman.” There are even some normal words that she had been shown to mispronounce such as how “Haperdashery” became “Haerbradagrening,” “Habbledaspery,” and “Have-a-dash-of-tea.”

Buffy tended to unconsciously babble out almost senseless sentences when she was emotional or nervous (much to the amusement, confusion, or dismay of other people.) Angel and Willow had discussed this aspect of hers fondly and ended up both agreeing that when Buffy was emotionally excited or worked up, it was hard for someone else to get a word in a conversation with her. Giles once described Buffy as being willful, insolent, and that she abused the English language terribly. Buffy would speak in strange phrases and tangents similar to what Willow would do which could confuse other people especially Giles at one point.

Philosophy of Life: Live in the present and for the future. Life is a little too short to do anything else.

----

Strengths:

  • Agility
  • Brilliant and cunning mind, courage, determination, and ended up not having a problem with making difficult decisions (with examples of Buffy’s intelligence including her clearly getting near-perfect S.A. T. scores, her defeat of Zachary Kralik by using his dependency on anti-psychotic medication against him, her rapid deduction of Riley’s affiliation to the Initiative based on weeks of evidence, her quick deduction of the Buffy Bot’s true nature, and her seemingly immediate realization of Katrina Silber’s true murderer upon hearing her name at the police station)
  • Collective memories of all the past Slayers who were called before her
  • Durability
  • Enhanced reflexes and senses
  • Excellent hand-to-hand combat fighting from slayer training
  • Fast healing abilities
  • Gift of natural proficiency with many different weapons
  • Incredible Speed
  • Knowledge of art, basic reading, spelling, and writing, French, grammar, history, music, and sciences like biology and chemistry
  • Limited ability to sense vampires
  • Mystical protection after she became the leader to the activated Slayers since Xander commented that Buffy had some degree of mystical protection over her now at least while she slept and to that end her protection meant even daggers spilt apart so as not to pierce her skin
  • Prophetic dreams
  • Superhuman Strength

----

Temporary Powers:

Buffy has had possession of other abilities for brief periods of time:

  • Telepathy-In high school Buffy had received an aspect of a demon that she had killed. She gained the ability to hear the thoughts of other people (although not vampires which leave no reflection in the mind). This made her become unable to control all of the thoughts in her head so Angel killed a second demon of this type and made her a potion containing the demon’s heart in it which stopped the ability altogether.
  • Super-Slayer-In order to defeat Adam, Buffy became the focus of a complex spell that drew on the pure source of the Slayer’s power and briefly gave her the combined abilities of Giles, Willow, and Xander. Buffy gained incredibly potent magical abilities, had access to Giles’ extensive knowledge of hand to hand combat and spells, and her original Slayer powers were increased to far greater levels. She was able to telekinetically stop Adam’s bullets in the arm and turn a missile into a dove and punch through Adam’s armored hide and rip out his radioactive uranium power core without ill effects. Though immediately after Buffy had defeated the nearly invincible Adam the spell on her had faded.

  • Invisibility-Shortly after her resurrection, Buffy was accidently rendered invisible by the Trio. She enjoyed her new ability at first before she learned that her life was in danger because of it. Willow reversed the effects on her when she got a hold of the Trio’s gun.

----

Weaknesses:

  • A short attention span at times
  • Could hold grudges against people who she believed that wronged her, be judgmental, and irrationality
  • Did known to have been self-absorbed and selfish at times
  • Ended up trusting people too easily
  • Her friends
  • Often displayed poor driving skills

Buffy's 'actual name' is Buffy. She stated that her mother gave her the name in Season 4 "Something Blue". No where has Joss Whedon or any other legitimate source ever stated that her name was anything else.
