Cursed More Than Blessed

by Katelyn Abbott

Cassandra was the daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy and the twin sister of Helenus. Her brown hair  had been kept in curls and she brown eyes and fair skin.  She was very beautiful, intelligent, charming, desirable, elegant, friendly, and gentle, but she was considered to be insane. Cassandra was described as “the second most beautiful woman in the world” and her beauty was even compared to that of Aphrodite and Helen of Troy. Apollo ended up falling in love with her and he gave her many gifts including the gift of prophecy, but when she rejected him and scorned his love for her he turned this gift into a curse. She would be able to see the future and be correct in her predictions, but nobody would ever believe a word she said. This Trojan princess foresaw the events of the Trojan War where at the end of it she was abducted and brutally raped by Ajax the Lesser when she sought refuge in the temple of Athena. She was taken as a concubine by King Agamemnon of Mycenae and she was murdered along with him and their twin sons Pelops and Teledamus by his wife Clytemnestra and her lover Aegisthus shortly after their arrival in Mycenae.

A wave of brown curls,
Brown eyes the color of chocolate,
Skin as smooth and soft and white as ivory,
And a voice as sweet as a nightingale’s

Blessed with beauty, intelligence, and charm,
Cassandra was desired by men
Dozens of suitors sought for her hand in marriage,
But she ended up rejecting all of them
She felt that all of her suitors were of the same selfish breed with the same mind of selfish
Intentions towards her
Some of them wanted to marry her for her family’s wealth, some for her position of power, And
Some for her beauty
These suitors wanted an obedient and pretty trinket and the elegant Trojan princess would be No
Man’s obedient and pretty trinket

Cassandra was cursed to capture the attentions of Apollo
The Sun God desired to have her as his own
He ended up wooing her with flowers, fruit, gorgeous robes, jewels, and wine
He followed her around like a lost puppy whispering words of love
He gave her father King Priam honors in an attempt to win her gratitude
He wrote long odes to her which he made into music and played on the lyre to her
But Cassandra was not won over by any of his efforts to gain her love

Cassandra was flattered that an Olympian god sought her favors
Golden-haired and blue-eyed Apollo was extraordinarily handsome
His intellect and his charm were impossible to dispute
He could dance, play the lyre, and sing
He was deeply wealthy and extremely powerful
He was an expert with the bow
How could any woman not see what a grand catch he was?

However Cassandra was also afraid
It was likely that he would grow tired of her as she aged
Just as it was possible that another woman might catch his eye
She knew that relationships between the gods and mortals rarely went well
Women who were loved by Apollo often suffered tragic fates
Clytia, who wanted Apollo for herself, betrayed her sister Leucothoe to their father Orchamus
About the truth that she was Apollo’s lover and their enraged father buried Leucothoe alive
Apollo would not forgive Clytia for betraying his lover Leucothoe
She grieved and had wilted away slowly to death
He turned her into the sunflower which follows the sun every day
Coronis fell in love with Ischys while she was pregnant with Apollo’s child
She gave into her desires and Apollo had her killed for her infidelity
Luckily the baby Asclepius was saved by Hermes cutting him out of her womb
Hermes gave the child to the centaur Chiron to raise Apollo’s son for Apollo,
But he took Coronis ‘s soul to Tartarus in the underworld where the wicked are punished
Creusa was raped by Apollo and she had a son Ion with him, but to save her own life she left Ion
To die in the wild where Hermes saved him and took him to be raised at Delphi by a Priestess
Daphne was changed into the laurel tree by her father when she called for his help fleeing Apollo
Cassandra did not wish to become one of them who suffered tragic fates

Apollo granted Cassandra the gift of prophecy
He was sure that by making her the finest prophetess in the world that Cassandra would Return
His love for her to him and share his bed as his lover and she would bear him a child
Cassandra was shocked by this so she thanked him for it even though it made her Uncomfortable,
But she was unable to give him her heart and told him gently that she did not love him in Return

Apollo flew into a rage just as she feared he would do so
He condemned her to be able to see the future and be correct in her predictions, but to never Be
Believed by for anyone for all eternity
He cursed her to see fire, grief, illness, and starvation,
To see women raped, men slaughtered, and treasure plundered,
To smell the repulsive smell of the earth stained red with blood,
To hear the sounds of the cries of children, the groans of the dying, and the screams of Women,
To know that her brother Paris would steal Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, From
Her husband King Menelaus of Sparta and take her back to Troy with him as his own wife,
To know that the Greeks would declare war on Troy for the abduction of Helen and the theft of
The treasures he would steal from Menelaus’s palace in Sparta,
To know that the Greeks would attack the Trojan gates,
To know that the Greeks would become rich with spoils,
To know that the Greeks would enslave Troy’s neighbors,
To know that the Greeks would fatten themselves on their neighbors’ butchered cattle,
To know that the Greeks and the Trojans would fight each other for ten years,
To know that the walls of Troy would be filled with broken people,
To know that the city of Troy would be full with sorrow and the streets flooded with tears,
To know that her beloved brother Prince Hector would be slain by the mighty Achilles in Revenge for Patroclus’s death,
And to know that the Greeks would win the war by trickery through the means of a magnificent Wooden horse

“You are free to warn them as much as you desire, Cassandra,” Apollo taunted her in a Satisfied voice, “but no one will ever believe a word you say. You will be seen as either a liar Or mad. You will live a life full of anguish and brutal treatment, see everything you hold dear Be destroyed knowing there is nothing you can do to stop it, and then you will die a violent Death. Such is the punishment for a mortal like you who dares to reject a divine god such as Me!”

He doomed Cassandra to hell.
